Facial bone radiography is still commonly performed despite the introduction of improved imaging techniques such as CT scanning. This page considers all aspects of plain film radiography of the facial bones'.

Maxillary Opacity

This patient was involved in a fight and received several blows to the face. Both maxillary sinuses demonstrate opacification	The patient's swollen right cheek produces a veiling opacity over the maxilla. The blood associated with the right maxillary fracture produces an air/fluid level. The mucous retention cyst is a non-acute incidental finding. These 3 maxillary opacities have distinctly different appearances.
