Coronoid Process Fractures

Introduction

Coronoid process fractures are commonly seen in patients with posterior elbow dislocations. Coronoid process fractures may need dedicated radiographic techniques to be demonstrated adequately.

Case 1

This 24 year old male presented to the Emergency Department after falling onto an outstretched hand. There was some suggestion that the patient's right elbow had been hyper-extended in the fall. He was examined and referred for right elbow radiography.

There are subtle metaphyseal cortical discontinuities.
The coronoid process appears to demonstrate lucencies consistent with a fracture
The radial head projection has projected the radial head over the coronoid process.
This projection was achieved using the lateral elbow position with the X-ray beam angled away from the shoulder (opposite angulation to a radial head view). The coronoid process fracture is clearly demonstrated.
