Ultrasound scanning guidelines

Assessment of twin pregnancy

Additional features that should be documented in twin pregnancies:
  • Gender
  • Number of placentae
  • Presence of a seperating membrane between sacs
  • Nature of membrane/placenta junction (presence/absence of "twin peak" sign)
  • Subjective assessment of membrane thickness
  • Relative size of amniotic sac volumes (deepest pool or two quadrant AFI)
  • Relative size of twins (significant discrepancy is 20% difference in EFW or greater than 20mm difference in AC)
If monochorionic pregnancy or Twin-Twin Transfusion Syndrome is suspected
  • Perform a more detailed assessment
