Ultrasound scanning protocol for DVT

Lower limb venous thrombosis (DVT)

Assess:
  • Deep vein compressibility - CFV / FV / Popliteal vein
  • CFV phasicity
  • Popliteal vein flow with augmentation
  • Calf veins - PTV / Per V / ATV / Gastroc V / Soleal V compressibility
  • Deep vein lumen
  • Other causes of leg swelling:
    • Bakers cyst
    • haematoma
    • oedema
    • muscle tear
    • tendon tear
Standard documentation:
  • CFV - comp / non comp
  • CFV spectral trace with Valsalva's or deep inspiration
  • FV Proximal / mid thigh / distal thigh - comp / non comp
  • Pop V mid - comp / non comp
  • Pop V spectral trace with augmentation
  • Calf veins: PTV, Per V, ATV with colour doppler showing filling with augmentation and/or compression views
