Ultrasound protocols for liver biopsy

  • The purpose of this scan is to mark a site for liver biopsy
  • The patient must be supine on aa flat bed and must not move after scan
  • Site marking must occur with the doctor who is oerfroming the procedure present
  • The preferred site is in the coronal plane, laterally in an intercostal space
  • The physician will direct the patients respiration and instruct tbe sonographer as to their preferred site
Assess:
  • Liver at the biopsy site demonstrating adequate depth for biopsy
  • Liver surface in the left lobe
Documentation:
  • Image of liver at the biopsy site
  • Depth to liver capsule
