J - Glossary of Terms


jaundice(jawn´dis) A condition characterised by high blood bilirubin levels and staining of the tissues with bilirubin, which imparts a yellow color to the skin and mucous membranes.
jejuno-(je-ju'no) Prefix signifying some relation to jejunum; as jejunoduodenal, jejunitis, jejunectomy, jejunostomy.
jejunum(je-ju´num) The middle portion of the small intestine, located between the duodenum and the ileum.
joint capsuleThe fibrous tissue that encloses the joint cavity of a synovial joint.
joint mouse (joint mous), Small, movable calcific body in or near a joint, most com¬monly knee joint.
joule (J) The unit of energy; the work done when a force of 1 N acts on an object along a distance of 1 m.
jugular(jug'u-lar) adjective, Latin jugulum = neck. Of or pertaining to region of throat or neck, specifically to jugular vein.
juxta-(juks'tah-) Prefix meaning by side of, near; as juxtaspinal, juxtopyloric, justa-articular, situated or occurring near part specified.
juxta-articular Adjacent to a joint.
juxtaposition(juks"tah-po-zish'un). A placing or being placed end to end or side by side; apposition.
