Z - Glossary of Terms


Zonography Tomographic technique that depicts thick sections or zones of tissue by utilising tomographic angles of 10 degrees or less.
zoster (zos'ter) Acute inflammatory skin disease of nervous origin, causing tenderness, itching, and neuralgic pains; it is characterised by clusters of small vesicles on a reddish base following along course of a peripheral nerve; herpes zoster; zona; shingles.
zygapophyseal (zig"ap-of-iz'e-al) Of or pertaining to a zygapophysis or to zygapophyses.
Zygapophyseal joints(zig"ap-of-iz'e-al) Pairs of synovial facet joints between transverse processes in the spine.
zygapophysis (zIg"ah-pof'i-sis) Yokelike articular process; specifically, one of articular processes of neural arch of a vertebra.
zygion (zig'i-on) Point at either end of bregmatic diameter of skull.
zygoma (zi-go'mah) Arch formed by union of malar bone of face and zygomatic process of temporal bone of cranium.
zygomatic (zi-go-mat'ik) Of or pertaining to zygomatic arch or to malar bone.
Zygote(zi´g-ot) A fertilized egg cell formed by the union of a sperm cell and an ovum.
