Ultrasound scanning guidelines for MCA Doppler

MCA Doppler

MCA Doppler should be performed when requested on pregnancies at risk for fetal anaemia or if fetal hydrops is suspected

Assess:
  • PW spectral of the MCA in the proximal portion of the artery close it its origin at the circle of Willis. Angle of insonation should be no more than 15 degrees. Angle correct and measure peak systolic velocity.
  • Amniotic fluid volume
  • Fetal position and presentation
Documentation:
  • 2 x MCA Pulse Wave spectral traces
  • Amniotic fluid volume (AFI)
  • Presentation
