Ultrasound scanning guidelines

Lower limb venous Incompetence (venous insufficiency)

Assess:

  • Visible varicies / ulcers / skin changes
  • Venous incompetence CFV / FV / Pop V / GSV / SSV
  • Perforators
    • Competence (reflux > 0.5 cm)
    • Level, position and relation to varicosities
    • Diameter of lumen as it crosses the fascia
  • Level of junction of GSV / SSV
  • Site of drainage of varicies
  • Anatomical venous variants

Documentation:
  • Spectral trace with distal augmentation CFV / FV prox / mid / distal
  • Spectral trace with distal augmentation GSV at SFJ / prox thigh / mid thigh / distal thigh / mid calf
  • Spectral trace with distal augmentation Pop V prox / mid /distal
  • Spectral trace with distal augmentation SSV at SPJ / mid calf
  • Perforator spectral trace with distal augmentation
  • Perforator diameter measurement / distance from bony landmark
